How To Train the 'Well Rounded' Employee
The day to day grind of running a business can literally
overwhelm most business owners. Between managing accounts,
dealing with customer issues, directing meeting, and
finding the time to actually sell the products and services
of the company, it can be all but impossible to handle it
all. Still, business owners survive every day with little
thought of finding a solution to ease their burdens and
instead just hope the problems go away.
With continuing education courses and online classes, the
average employee has several opportunities to better their
work skills. However, nothing compares to the training they
can receive 'first hand' by a qualified trainer or employee
or you. Most individuals benefit from hands on training.
Seeing one's work evolve into reality is rewarding and
encouraging for employees. And if the result creates a
highly trained and happier employee, why not invest some
time in training your employees properly.
There are two primary options you can choose from to
provide this type of hands-on training. The first is to
hire a professional trainer who specializes in training
workers in your field. The other is to have a current
employee with exceptional skills and leadership qualities
to conduct the training. Either option will work well.
The Best Way to Train Employees
Trainers often teach a group of people verses an individual.
This method of training is more beneficial and allows the
trainer to cover a wider area of job skills. Training
material is passed to each employee for future reference and
work shops are conducted in 'real time' for a hands-on feel
for the job.
For someone to master the art of selling products or
services, a clear understanding of sales techniques is
first necessary. Selling definitely requires a large skill
set and a lot of practice before someone becomes
proficient. Naturally, there are people who always excel
more than most at certain things and sales is no exception.
Thorough training in sales involves a careful study of the
products or services being sold and how they are superior
to what the competition is offering. You have to make sure
that the trainees understand that potential clients are all
different and will be motivated by different factors to
make a purchase. Time will have to be devoted to training
employees to handle the varying personalities of customers
to avert problems that may arise in the future.
Typically, an administrative assistant helps with managing
accounts and customer service. It is important that sales
training includes the tasks a person holding this position
will cross. The idea is too NOT eliminate any position from
the training sessions. This will give you, the owner, the
ability to move employees from one job position into another
in the event of someone leaving your company without worry-
ing about re-training them to do the job.
Continuous Sales Training
Training should not begin and end with the instructor.
There needs to be periodic training updates in the form of
monthly meetings. Just give a brief rundown as to what is
new, how it operates, and things like that so that everyone
in the meeting knows the latest offerings. A newsletter,
e-mail, or tapes are also great ways to keep training up to
date and the information fresh in people's minds.
Putting together a team of competent associates does not
happen overnight. Investing the money in a trainer is a
good idea and will help you keep everyone on track. Your
business can only benefit by having well-trained
associates.
