Safety at Work

Management of safety is a requirement in any engineering endeavor. The practice of mechanical and electrical work in a building is hazardous if you are not aware of the dangers. Workers have to be trained in good work practices to avoid accidents. Use of Safety Cartoons in communications is an effective way to remind workers of safety concepts. Printable cartoon safety poster is a very cheap way to do this.

The most obvious danger in a building is fire. Building codes dictate certain standards that have to be met in all large sized buildings. However, the occupants in a building should know how to prevent fires, how to react when they discover a fire, how to put out a small fire, how to prevent the spreading of a fire, how to escape from a big fire, how to alert other people, and what the fire systems do.

Another danger is electrical shock. This is not very obvious. That's why it should be made known to all people who handle electrical equipment. Electrical hazard comes without warning. The best protection is awareness.

Entering an enclosed tank or room is a hazard. Sometimes people go into tanks without even being aware of the danger. There have been cases of suffocation that proved to be fatal.

Persons working in buildings sometimes have to work at heights above 12 feet. They can fall and injure themselves if they do not take the necessary precautions.

When people work high above, they do drop objects. Tools and materials falling from a great height become lethal flying objects when they land on somebody below.

Persons working with heavy machines are liable to hurt themselves if they do not know the correct way of lifting, and transporting. Related to this is the way they use their bodies and the tools.

Chemical hazards are usually present in the manufacturing environment. The use of strong, corrosive or explosive chemicals makes it necessary to take the necessary precautions when handling them. People have to be made aware of what to do when there is a spillage.

Gas cylinders are under high pressure. Special precautions need to be taken when handling them. The nature of the gases has to be understood to prevent accidents.

Sometimes accidents do occur even in normal environment. Sometimes the floor may be slippery, or contain a hole. Sometimes passing vehicles may pose a danger. Persons trained to spot dangers will be able to detect dangerous situations and take the necessary steps to diffuse it.

Personal protective equipment has been developed for workers in potentially dangerous work situations. The workers have to be trained to use them properly.
